In 2018 BC Parks initiated a multi-year project to replace and repair the failing boardwalk infrastructure used to access the hot springs at Maquinna Marine Provincial Park. This project is being completed to enhance public safety and improve the visitor experience. In order to reduce impacts to visitors and tour operators, the boardwalk replacement work is scheduled over a three year period. The project is also scheduled to be completed in phases to avoid closing the park for extended periods of time.
Phase 1 was successfully completed in January 2019. Phase 2 of the project was scheduled to start the winter of 2019/20, however, the project is being deferred for one year. In order to ensure infrastructure is safe for the visiting public, small sections of the boardwalk have been identified as a priority and will be addressed but the major replacement work is on hold. There will be no scheduled park closures for the winter of 2019/20.
BC Parks may need to temporarily close the park, for a day at a time, in order to conduct some of the more difficult repairs involving the removal of sections of the boardwalk. However, these short closures will be planned in advance, kept to a minimum, and tour operators will be given ample warning. Every effort will be made to complete the work without closing the park.
Tour operators holding valid Park Use Permits for Maquinna Marine Provincial Park have been notified. BC Parks and the Clayoquot Area staff appreciate your understanding and your continued cooperation.
