Position Statement: Reporting to the Director of Destination Marketing, the incumbent will work collaboratively with the Tourism Vancouver Island team and with Vancouver Island North Stakeholders to support the development and implementation of the Vancouver Island North Tourism business and marketing plans and to support the sustainable growth of tourism on the North Island. 

Position Specifications

  • Ensure timely evaluation and follow-up of all projects 
  • Ensure that budget goals are accomplished through monitoring expenses and revenues of all marketing initiatives

Position Activities


  • Coordinate the creation and implementation of marketing plans for Vancouver Island North Tourism 
  • Prepare the annual Business Plan 
  • Prepare the annual Marketing Plan 
  • Prepare Critical Review of marketing projects for annual planning session 
  • Consult and communicate with the Vancouver Island North Tourism Advisory Committee in all phases of marketing planning 
  • Coordinate destination development workshops and meetings as required 


  • Oversee the implementation of all aspects of the annual Vancouver Island North Tourism Marketing Plan including sales, media purchasing, and project coordination 
  • Attend Media and Trade FAMs as required 
  • Distribute collateral materials to targeted outlets 
  • Maintain Vancouver Island North Tourism social media channels – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, blog 
  • Coordinate and distribute Vancouver Island North Tourism press releases to local media 
  • Coordinate participation in public events 
  • Coordinate creation and distribution of annual Stakeholder Marketing Calendar 


  • Oversee coordination of all marketing related projects, i.e. EQ, Stakeholder Satisfaction Surveys, etc. 


  • Prepare reports and correspondence requested by Advisory Committee Chair or Tourism Vancouver Island’s Director of Destination Marketing 
  • Prepare and present monthly reports for the Regional District of Mount Waddington 
  • Prepare and present annual Marketing Activity Report for Regional District of Mount Waddington 

Vancouver Island North Tourism Advisory Committee 

  • Serve as secretary to Advisory Committee 
  • Coordinate advisory committee information and meetings including preparing agendas and supporting documents, taking minutes, distribution of minutes, terms of reference, etc. 


  • Coordinate and operate the Vancouver Island North Tourism office including developing reporting mechanisms with Tourism Vancouver Island, i.e. processing invoices for payment 
  • Serve as liaison between area stakeholders, the Regional District of Mount Waddington and Tourism Vancouver Island 
  • Attend meetings as requested by the Director of Destination Marketing 
  • Represent Vancouver Island North Tourism at public events and meetings as requested 
  • Maintain the stakeholder database ensuring it is current and updated as required 
  • Represent Vancouver Island North Tourism at industry events 


  • Respond to web generated and phone inquiries and communicate leads to stakeholders 
  • Liaise with all North Island visitor centres to review, collect, store and use visitor statistics 
  • Prepare Community Tourism Opportunity applications and final reporting 
  • Research additional funding opportunities 

Knowledge and Abilities 

  • Must have secondary school graduation with a preference for some post-secondary education in Marketing or Tourism Management or comparable experience 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
  • Experience with MS Office, database applications and general office procedures 
  • Able to work well with a small team, work collaboratively and be goal-oriented 
  • Able to work on multiple projects simultaneously 
  • Able to work independently, show initiative and meet deadlines 
  • High degree of sensitivity in dealing with public, staff, board and stakeholders 
  • In-depth knowledge of Vancouver Island and the Regional District of Mount Waddington 
  • Able to travel and work flexible hours as required 
  • A valid drivers’ license and a reliable vehicle is essential 


Position is based on 35 hours per week 

  • Work schedule is from 9:00 – 5:00 Monday – Friday, with a one hour unpaid lunch break per day 
  • A 3-month probationary period for new employees is required and will be reviewed by both the employee and the Director of Destination Marketing 
  • Annual performance reviews and compensation are conducted prior to the end of each fiscal year 
  • Entitlement to a benefit package will begin at the satisfactory conclusion of the 3-month probation period 
  • The BC Employment Standards Branch sets all other terms of reference unless otherwise specified 

Working Conditions

  • Satellite office is located in the Regional District of Mount Waddington 
  • Single-staffed office 
  • Tourism Vancouver Island office and Director of Destination Marketing located in Nanaimo
